WQO-WH-02 · Salt-Based Whole House Softener

Genuinely soft water. The trade-off is salt.

The Terrain uses ion exchange — the most proven method for removing hardness. Calcium and magnesium ions are physically removed from the water and replaced with sodium as water passes through a resin bed.

What it actually does

Hardness minerals are removed, not just neutralized. That's the difference from the Cascade, and it's noticeable: soap lathers with less product, skin and hair feel different after showering, glassware comes out of the dishwasher without spots, and scale stops forming inside your appliances.

Standard configuration is a 10×54 tank; 13×54 and 16×65 are available for higher-demand homes. Resin is available in 10% or 16% cross-link. A Nustar or WS1 smart valve controls regeneration with upflow regeneration — which preserves the unused portion of the resin bed rather than flushing it — and precision brining, which calculates the exact salt required per cycle rather than using a fixed amount.

Duo Tank configuration

An optional two-tank setup that separates the two jobs. Tank one handles softening: resin and brine regeneration, nothing else. Tank two is a dedicated multi-media filter — a quartz and fine garnet underbed for flow distribution and sediment, KDF-55 media for heavy metals and chlorine, coconut carbon for taste and odor, and catalytic carbon for chloramine and sulfur odor.

The reason to do this: filtration media and softening resin have different jobs and different lifespans. Running both in one tank means the resin carries load it wasn't designed for. Separating them extends resin life and produces cleaner water.

Who this is right for

Homes with genuinely hard water where you can see and feel the effects — visible scale, spotted glassware, soap that won't lather, dry skin after every shower. This is the system that actually solves those.

Who this is not right for

You will need to buy salt and refill the brine tank periodically. The system needs an electrical outlet and a drain line for regeneration discharge. It adds a small amount of sodium to your water — not enough to matter for most people, but worth knowing if you're on a sodium-restricted diet.

And it does not purify your drinking water. Softening and filtration are different things. If you want soft water throughout the house and purified drinking water, you need a drinking water system as well — which is what the Summit bundles together.

A straightforward recommendation

The right system is not the most expensive one.

It's the one that solves your home's actual water problem.

Every home has different pipes, different water, and different needs. We don't know yours yet — which is why we don't quote a system over the phone or push a product on a webpage.

What the consultation actually is

A WQO specialist comes to your home at a time you choose. They test your water and look at your plumbing, your fixtures, and your appliances. They explain what they find in plain language — what's in your water, what it's doing, and what it isn't doing.

Then they tell you which system fits, or whether you need one at all.

What it isn't

There's no obligation to buy, no pressure on the visit, and no follow-up sales calls unless you ask for them. If we recommend nothing, that's a legitimate outcome, and it happens.
